Multiple glassware is used globally across different industries and laboratories, be it the food and beverage industry for quality testing or an educational institution for learning and experimenting. It exists in not only different types but also different sizes and shapes. Glassware is used to measure, heat, experiment, and create solutions. It is of two specialized types:
Soda Lime Glass: This glass comprises sand, soda and lime. Other materials might be added to produce a variety of soda-lime glasses. This type of glass has less chemical resistance and is more suitable for storing. In addition, it has a low tolerance for heat changes compared to borosilicate glass. Borosilicate Glass: This glass type has a low thermal expansion, making it more resistant to thermal shock. It is composed of boron dioxide and silica and can tolerate high levels of heat compared to soda-lime glass. This glass's strength is superior to other glasses, thus decreasing the chances of breakage. It is commonly used for labware, glass containers, commodity items, and bakeware.
Coming to the categories of glassware, below are commonly used:
1. Griffin Style Beaker- One of the most frequently used in laboratories and works as a container for storing, heating, stirring and mixing liquids. The most commonly used is borosilicate glass Griffin Beakers.
2. Volumetric flasks- A volumetric flask is also used to contain solutions. However, it is mainly used when you need to know the inch-perfect and accurate volume of the solution in preparation. They are available in class A volumetric flasks and class B volumetric flasks.
3. Erlenmeyer Flasks- This flask has a conical body, cylindrical head, and flat bottom. It is usually used for handling liquids. Get Erlenmeyer Flasks when you need to incubate, cool, filter, or store the liquids without the risk of getting spilled. Laboratories can also use this for titration because of its narrow neck and skewed sides.
4. Media Bottles- Media bottles can be found in both glass and plastic; however, glass media bottles are used to work with higher temperatures. It is used to store and protect liquids from outside contamination and is available in different sizes. In addition, storage in media bottles can be extended to a good time.
5. Graduated Cylinders- Another frequently used glassware to measure liquids, relatively less accurate than volumetric flasks (more precisely measures the liquids) and more accurate than beakers. These are also known as measuring cylinders and can deduce displacement.
6. Glass Test tubes- Glass tubes are routinely used to handle the chemicals and examine the results from adding other content(s) to the tube. Glass test tubes can mix and heat solid or liquid substances.
